How are parameters changed without stopping the experiment? (EC-Lab/BT-Lab 'modify on the fly')
EC-Lab and BT-Lab allow the control settings of a running experiment to be changed in real time; experiments can be built step by step and observed changes acted upon immediately.
Key points
- The charge current can be changed during battery cycling: if the nominal capacity was overestimated, the current needed for the target C-rate is overestimated too; it is corrected without restarting the experiment.
- In cyclic voltammetry the vertex potentials can be changed during the experiment to study redox reactions at different potentials.
- If the applied current or voltage looks likely to breach thresholds, the settings can be changed at once to keep the cell from becoming unstable, without stopping the experiment.
- Experiments can be built progressively without having to plan everything from scratch; this applies to potentiostats and battery cyclers alike.
